Home construction is expected to start later this year for the much anticipated Babcock Ranch, a town, “billed as the most environmentally sensitive development ever.” Kitson & Partners, who might sound familiar, they are also the developers for Talis Park, began planning Babcock Ranch in 2006.
To build this one of a kind sustainable solar town Kitson partnered with Florida Power & Light (FPL). FPL is building both the solar plant and the power lines to support a town expected to be home to 50,000 people. Continuing their commitment to sustainability, the town of Babcock ranch will feature a community herb and vegetable garden, fitness centers, parks, performing art venues, as well as shopping and dining. More than half of the town will be reserved for green spaces.
Phase 1 of the town is set for completion in 2017, and expectations are that 1,100 residences will be constructed, as well as the beginnings of a downtown district featuring a café, restaurant, wellness center, and continued learning facilities.
This is one of the most exciting developments for the future of southwest Florida. Be sure to check back often for the latest news on America’s first solar city – Babcock Ranch.
